Although it was a fine, sunny, morning turn-out for the work morning was on the low side. This was a shame because there was lots to do but, unfortunately, we just didn’t have enough people to get it all done.
The important job of the morning was bracken pulling. We had done some bracken pulling on the May field day. At that time the bracken was quite sparse and short. The wetter weather since had resulted in a flush of strong new growth across the heather beds around the Green.
We cleared about half of one area of heather before we stopped for drinks. As volunteer numbers were low Jacinta actually had to take some of her home-made cake back home with her at the end of the morning – what a missed treat for our absent volunteers!
With about half an hour of the morning left we decided to tackle another area of heather with a view to clearing it completely of bracken. This we managed to do and rewarded ourselves with a drink of shandy.
The remaining bracken, and no doubt any re-growth, and the clearing of shrubby growth at the side of the heather beds, will need to wait until the next field day.
This year we will be having a additional field day on the second Saturday in July. Due to an administration glitch posters will not be appearing around the Warren to advertise this additional field day so please check the Facebook page or the website.
